Hello!! Welcome to my About Me page!!

This Web Site is a mix between my own personal Site and the digital real estate of the fictional (?) Haney Space Mall.

Please enjoy your visit. Don’t forget to stop by the food court on your way out!

The mall is a cultural icon I am really drawn to. I have so many memories of my grandparents taking me to the local mall as a kid for ice cream or to grab a bite at the Zellers restaurant. As a teenager, the mall was someplace we’d often go to hang out as it was one of the only indoor spaces we had to socialize.
As someone who grew up in a small, low to middle class, predominantly white town, I draw a lot of parallels between how malls have emptied out and lost their roles as pillars within their communities (as consumer culture has shifted over time), and how late-stage capitalism has reached the point where the labour low–middle class people once counted on to provide them with fulfilling lives is no longer keeping up with the demands of capital. Both the mall and these people have been left behind.

Aside from Neocities, on the internet I spend a lot of time watching YouTube videos. I think video essays are such a cool medium for making arguments and expressing ideas.

I completed my BSc this year and have worked as a server, fullstack software dev, and a science journalist. For my capstone project, I wrote an investigative piece about how my university handled ethics in its computer science cirriculum (spoiler alert: it simply did not)
Favourite Godzilla Movies: Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964), Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974), Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001), Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002), Shin Godzilla (2016)

Wait ... why Neocities !?

I joined Neocities during the panini for a similar reason I think a lot of people did — being on an Internet dictated by capital, all the time, is exhausting. I like using certain apps to connect with artists and learn from different perspectives, but over the past year it’s become so obvious just how much the purpose of these apps is to inhibit radical or progressive content and show us stuff we want to buy or that makes us turn our brains off (which is not always bad, but you know what I mean).

I won’t say I want to completely disregard those apps, as like I said above, they’re currently a good way to engage with content that maybe I wouldn’t have otherwise found — especially while they remain the main places this content is hosted.

But for the amount of effort it took to curate my experience on these platforms to actually appeal to me, I just got really tired. I’ve already had so much fun in the short time I’ve been on this platform, writing my silly little code on my silly little website, and exploring other people’s corners of the internet (which I feel so fortunate to get to check out). It’s really rejuvinating.
