I joined Neocities during the panini for a similar reason I think a lot of people did — being on an Internet dictated by capital, all the time, is exhausting. I like using certain apps to connect with artists and learn from different perspectives, but over the past year it’s become so obvious just how much the purpose of these apps is to inhibit radical or progressive content and show us stuff we want to buy or that makes us turn our brains off (which is not always bad, but you know what I mean).
I won’t say I want to completely disregard those apps, as like I said above, they’re currently a good way to engage with content that maybe I wouldn’t have otherwise found — especially while they remain the main places this content is hosted.
But for the amount of effort it took to curate my experience on these platforms to actually appeal to me, I just got really tired. I’ve already had so much fun in the short time I’ve been on this platform, writing my silly little code on my silly little website, and exploring other people’s corners of the internet (which I feel so fortunate to get to check out). It’s really rejuvinating.
